Don’t expectspring to stay around. On May first, we hit 90degrees! Most of us homeowners are cleaning their home, preparing it for summer.

In Texas we know the summers are going to be brutal. Many feel San Antonio is unbearable this time of year, I however and used to it! Now is the time to prepare your home for the high temperatures or make improvements to be more energy efficient. You can make small improvements now that will save money in the long run. These are minor thingsthat will cost less than larger renovations. Also keep in mind that there are tax credits for manyof these ideas.Search for available credits before heading these projects. Manufactures and the city of San Antonio provides a number of rebates as well.

Indoor improvements & Preparations:
It may not be 100 degrees yet, but turn on your AC anyway. Confirm your AC is working properly before he heavy heat.

Change the filters in your home. This process should be done at lease twice per year. Summertimes requires this be done more often, generally monthly. Especially when we starting hitting the 100s. Schedule a Full Maintenance for your air condition unit.

Often people close off ventilation to a particular room that is not inuse. Your air conditioning unit will be less efficient and cost you more to operate. Leaving your unit set on a higher temperature is a good habit to make. This will improve your energy cost, two degrees higher, makes a difference.

If you can’t take the heat, get out of your kitchen! In the summer months its best to take this saying literally. In these hot months outdoor cooking is king, so is your microwave, you can also make cold meals. All joking aside, over heating your kitchen will work yourAirCondictioning even harder. You can benefit from outdoor cooking, or cold cooking if even just a couple days per week.

Check your windows and doors and inspect caulking. Caulking can crack or peel over time and especially in high heat climates. When the caulking is damaged cool air can seep out making your ACUnit work harder. Not to mention that warm air comes in, both will causeyour unit to work overtime.

Keep the heat out of your home using reflective films when replacingwindows with energy efficient ones are not an option. If this is not feasible you can still be sure to close blinds, shades, or drapes during the hottest part of the day to block the suns heat..

check that your drip system and irrigation system is in good condition. Don’t know your water day, check it out on Saws.org.
You can change the exterior paint of your home to a light colorthat will reflect heat.

Planting trees will help cool the air andprovide shade for your home.

Properly caring for your home not only helps you keep your energy cost down, but also keep the value of your home up. Having awell cared for home is important, for many people their home is one of theirlargest investments.
